Dates of Mutua Madrid Open 2021:
Friday, 30 April to Sunday, 9 May

The Madrid Tennis Open is an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament which takes place on clay at La Caja Mágica Stadium in Madrid. This modern venue is home to three courts with retractable roofs. The main court has a capacity for 12,500 fans and is named after the great Spanish tennis player Manuel Santana who won the French Open, US Open and Wimbledon in the 1960s. Court 2 can accommodate 3,500 spectators and is named after the Catalan tennis star Arantxa Sánchez Vicario who won the French and US Opens in the 1990s as well as finishing runner-up at Wimbledon and in the Australian Open. The unnamed Court 3 has 2,500 seats.

From 2002 until 2008 the event was played on hard court at the Madrid Arena in Casa de Campo before moving to a clay court surface at La Caja Mágica in 2009. There was controversy at the 2012 event when it took place on blue clay allegedly in recognition of the livery of the Mutua Madrileña insurance company which sponsors the event. A number of top players including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic raised concerns about the blue surface and the following year the tennis courts reverted to traditional red clay.
