Menorca Beaches
There are so many beautiful beaches on Menorca and they are without doubt one
of the main reasons why so many people decide to take their holidays on the
island.
The beaches range from quiet and peaceful hidden coves where you can laze in the
sun from morning until night to the busy beaches with loads of water sports and
sand castles galore. Whilst quite a few of them are untouched by development
except for the very basics of facilities, others offer all manner of choices for
food and drink. One thing the beaches on the island of Menorca all have in
common is the fine white sand.
Some of the best and most popular beaches are situated on the south of the
island where the sand is soft due to the sandstone present and with the cliffs
making a contrasting backdrop and the crystal blue sea lapping at the sand, the
sights are really quite magnificent.
Son Bou is the longest and probably the most beautiful of beaches. It stretches
on for around two miles and is easily accessible by local public transport.
Don't forget to take your camera with you to take photos of the famous sand
dunes and protected marshes which act as a filter and source of food and shelter
for the great variety of marine life in the waters. The shallow waters make for
safe family bathing and there is a range of water sports and refreshment
facilities on offer.
Arenal d'en Castell
This is another popular beach but definitely not one for those wanting a quiet
time of it. The semi circular bay of serene blue water and fine white sand where
several types of refreshments and services are available is dominated by large
accommodation blocks and hotels and is the perfect spot for a family holiday. If
you fancy doing some wind surfing and water ski-ing this is the place to be.
Binibequer
Binibequer is a small beach set in a really pretty little cove. There are plenty
of sun beds for hire and a beach bar where you can take a drink whilst bathing
your feet in the sea. This is another great place for family bathing due to the
shallow and safe waters.
Cala Blanca
This has to be the most built up of beaches on the island of Menorca. Sad to say
it is not a place you would choose to visit for the beach only, but more for the
huge development of shops, hotels and restaurants which totally dwarf the close
by coastal area.
Cala En Porter
Cala En Porter is one of the oldest and most popular family beaches on the
island. Wide and sandy and framed by steep cliffs on either side, there are sun
loungers, water sports and safe bathing for children. The beach has many places
for eating and drinking during the day and evening.
Cala Santa Galdana
This beach has a natural balance of ecology and tourism. There is something to
keep everyone happy here. Water sports, beach facilities and all kinds of family
fun are right at your fingertips, but if you want to take a walk to a more
peaceful location this is a great point to set out from.
Cala Pregonda
Known affectionately as the jewel beach of Menorca, this stunning bay with light
coloured sand and super blue waters has a backdrop of pine and tamarisk woods.
The bay is totally unspoilt as there are just a handful of villas dotted along,
but the bay is not very easily accessible. However, for those who make the
effort, the rewards once you get there are great!
Cales Coves
The beach here is definitely one for the adventurous! There are no services
whatsoever, and access is very limited by either foot or a strong vehicle.
Nonetheless the location is completely and utterly breathtaking.
Es Grau
This is a perfect location for young children to bathe due to the shallow waters
which go as far as the small islet, Illa d'en Colon. Behind the beach is a
ramblers and bird watchers (the feathered variety!) paradise, the main point of
Menorcas biosphere reserve.
Punta Prima
This beach is probably the largest on the island and many water sports such as
wind surfing, sailing and pedalo rides are available. The currents can prove to
be quite difficult at times and for this reason you should always take notice of
the flags telling you whether or not it is safe to swim. Access is good to this
beach by road and food and refreshments are available.
Son Parc
Son Parc and its surrounding area are well known for the golf course and huge
accommodation development. However, even though the area is heavily populated
the beach here which offers food, drink and pedaloes never seems to be
overcrowded even in the height of the season.
