Lanzarote is a perfect place for you to take your holiday at any time of the year as it is blessed with hot days during the summer months and warm days during the winter. The temperature varies between 25 and 35 degrees in August and drops to a mild average of 21 degrees in January. The fact that there is very little rain in Lanzarote, around five and a half inches per year, makes this island an ideal all year round holiday destination for couples, families or single travellers and is suitable for all age groups.
Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, located only 79 miles from North Africa and is of volcanic origin. The last recorded eruptions took place in the 18th and 19th centuries and as a result many areas of the island look almost moonlike. Lanzarote boasts the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, the Atlantida, which stretches for almost 7 kilometres and incorporates many caves within.
For those who decide to take their holidays in Lanzarote there is a wide spectrum of different types of accommodation such as apartments, hotels, villas, studios and luxury resorts with board arrangements ranging from self catering to all inclusive.
Once you are there, depending on how you intend to spend your holiday, there are numerous things for you to see and do. If you are a water baby maybe you will try your hand at diving, sailing, or windsurfing. If you prefer to take a tour of the island and see the many sights on offer you can do this by organised excursions, by hiring a car for a few days or by taking the local bus. There is an excellent bus network on the island and all of the major holiday areas such as Puerto Del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca can be reached from the capital town of Arrecife.
Lanzarote Airport Car Hire
If you are lucky enough to be holidaying in Lanzarote during February and March you may find yourself watching, or even partaking in, the colourful Carnival events depending on which dates have been set as they change slightly from year to year. However, there are also many other festivals held throughout the rest of the year in the towns and villages of the island which are well worth seeing and you will be made most welcome by the locals.
When mixing with the locals they really love it when you have taken the time and trouble to learn a little of their language. So if you get the opportunity to check out a phrase book before or during your holiday and you are able to order your drinks or ask for the bill in Spanish they will really appreciate this. It will probably give you and your friends a good laugh too!
If you are visiting Lanzarote for relaxing times in the sun during the day, after a lively night on the town, you will find there is no end of sandy beaches for you to lap up the sunshine, gathering your strength together to face another busy evening ahead. The nightlife in Lanzarote, although not as hectic as some of the other Spanish islands, has a good variety to suit most tastes. The main areas for bars and clubs are again in Puerto Del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. These three resorts also have many family sports bars where you will be able to watch your favourite sport just like you do at home. Costa Teguise offers a selection of Irish bars and is also the place to head for if you prefer to get away from the typical tourist bars and see some real Canarian and Spanish entertainment.
Eating out will be a delight during your holiday in Lanzarote. With a huge range of Spanish and International restaurants to choose from your taste buds will be tingling. The Casa Roja is a favourite of regular holidaymakers and Canarians alike so you can be sure you are going to enjoy your meal and a bottle of good wine when you pay this restaurant a visit.
Of course, you usually manage to do a little shopping whilst on holiday and Lanzarote will not let you down on that score. Whether you are taking home souvenirs of your holiday or presents for your friends and family, the duty free shopping centres, boutiques and street markets have something for everyone.
Most people arrive at Lanzarote by air, landing at Lanzarote Airport, although it is possible to island hop around the Canaries, either by inter-island planes or by ferry boat. By taking the boat, you have the added advantage of being able to visit the smaller islands which do not have airport facilities of their own.
