Spain Private Tour ... Itinerary 15

Barcelona - Girona - Madrid - Toledo - Trujillo - Merida - Cordoba - El Chorro - Malaga Airport

Wednesday:

Nik and his wife arrived at Madrid airport in mid-July from Barcelona where they had spent a few days near Girona and dined at the famous El Bulli restaurant. Their arrival coincided with the announcement that London would host the 2012 Olympic Games. Madrid had had high hopes of the Games but it wasn't to be. We headed out of the airport and used the inner city M30 ring road to head south for the Toledo road. Ongoing roadworks (in anticipation of winning the Olympic vote) created horrendous traffic conditions. Avoid this road when trying to get around Madrid. Choose the M40 or M45 instead and for some routes the M50 is now an option. Once out of Madrid we took the N401 to Toledo where accommodation was reserved at the beautiful Toledo Parador. The rest of the day was spent visiting the main sights of the city.

Thursday:

We left Toledo early this morning via the N403 which joins up with the main NV Extremadura road just beyond Torrijos. By lunchtime we were in Trujillo a town famous as the birthplace of many of the Conquistadors who discovered the Americas including Francisco Pizarro. Lunch in the open cafés of the main square was pleasant in spite of the 45ºC temperature. After lunch we continued on to the Roman city of Merida and checked into the Merida Parador. The remainder of the day was spent visiting the well restored Roman sights in the city.

Friday

Nihil Mehta and his wife at the reservoirs near El ChorroThis morning we headed out south of Merida on the N630 going across to Cordoba on the N432. After checking into the Amistad Cordoba and having lunch the remainder of the day was spent taking a tour of the Mezquita and wandering around the small alleys of the Jewish Quarter.

Saturday

We left Cordoba this morning and headed south on the N331 towards Malaga. After Antequera we went west on the A382 and drove inland to visit the spectacular gorge at El Chorro. From here we continued on to Malaga airport where our tour ended.

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions each of which has a local government. Tour guide licences are granted to a limited number of people in each region which allows them to offer official guided tours of particular monuments within their region. We work closely with the licensed guides in the main cities and can hire their specialised services for any monuments on request.
