Flights to Spain - Luggage Allowances
With all the frenzied competition between budget airlines it was only a
matter of time before new schemes were introduced to raise prices.
We've received numerous reports from travellers flying to Spain from the UK
who have been fined (sorry ... "charged") a hefty fee for excess luggage.
Never has it been more important to check your booking confirmation form to
make sure you're aware of exactly what you're allowed to carry.
Too many passengers are finding that their budget deal isn't so attractive
once they've been charged the excess luggage fee.
Check The Airline Website Carefully
- Ryanair and Flybe are now charging for each piece of luggage that goes in
the hold. [See Ryanair Luggage Comments]
- Flyglobespan set a combined baggage allowance for hold luggage plus hand
luggage and along with several other carriers have started charging if you want
to sit in the seats with extra leg space (the tall tax).

We were charged a hefty fee by Globespan on our
return home from Ibiza. We asked to be allowed to remove items to reduce
the weight but were ignored. It was a stark choice pay up or leave a
case behind. More than half of the flight were charged! The hand
luggage being included in the 20 kilos caused the excess.

- Be careful with regulations regarding checked luggage. When an airline
states a limit of 20kg this doesn't necessarily mean that when travelling as a
couple one can carry 25kg and the other 15kg. "All baggage allowances are
personal and cannot be combined" is the phrase to look for on the airline
website (Ryanair and BMIbaby operate this policy).
- Some airlines will charge for sporting equipment irrespective of the weight
of your hold luggage (Aer Lingus and Monarch always charge for golf clubs).
Below we've listed the current hand luggage allowances for the main airlines
