Sierra Nevada - Ski in the South of Spain
Sierra Nevada is Europe's southernmost ski resort which hosted the World
Alpine Ski Championships in February 1996. It is
one of Europe's highest resorts with a surprisingly good snow record
considering the generally warm, sunny weather.
From
the top of the Veleta skiers are treated to a spectacular view across to the
Mediterranean Sea and on the clearest of days as
far as the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
The resort lies 32km southeast of the
beautiful Spanish city of Granada with its
stunning Alhambra Palace.
International visitors used to arrive via Malaga airport which is some 160km away
but now there are budget flights with Ryanair arriving at Granada airport from
Stansted and Liverpool which is less than an hour from the ski resort.
You can request a transfer
to Sierra Nevada from Malaga travelling by Mercedes 4x4 vehicles which are
fully equipped with roof racks and boxes ensuring that you, your party and your
ski equipment travel safely and comfortably to your chosen accommodation.
Many skiers choose to stay in in the lively city of Granada and travel up to Pradollano at the resort each morning (buses leave at 8am and 9am returning at
4pm and 6.30pm). Traffic can be a big problem. This isn't necessary as the ski
resort itself is a lively
place with a good range of hotels, bars and restaurants and a lively night life.
The weekends can get too busy and should be
avoided if you have that option and national holidays attract many visitors
especially over the Christmas period and during
'Semana Blanca' which usually falls around Carnaval in February. Take a
look at our recommended Sierra Nevada Hotels.
The main attraction of Sierra Nevada is its southerly location with excellent
year round weather. In terms of the quality of
skiing the resort cannot compete with the Pyrenees resorts but it is a beautiful
location which is more than adequate for
skiers up to an intermediate level. Unfortunately, the resort has a bad
reputation for the failure of local skiers to
respect queueing etiquette on the ski lifts and for the failure to respect
commonly accepted safety rules on the slopes.
Being so far south there is no way of accurately predicting snow conditions at
any particular time of the year.
