Puerto Pollensa Information
Puerto Pollensa
Puerto Pollensa lies on the beautiful bay of Pollensa in the very north
eastern corner of Mallorca some 53km from Palma. It is protected in the north by
the stunning Formentor peninsula and in the south by a similar rocky formation
leading to Cap des Pinar. With its sandy beach, beautiful scenery and fine
tourist infrastructure it has long been a popular destination especially amongst
British holidaymakers.
The resort of Puerto Pollensa is only 8km from neighbouring
Alcudia to the
south. It is a compact resort with mainly low rise buildings and a good
selection of bars and restaurants to suit the majority of visitors. Naturally
there are British and Irish pubs around though not too many and there are plenty
Mallorcan run eateries as well as a few Asian options.
Arriving from Alcudia you'll have the fine beach to your right as you approach
the main reort which begins around the Pollensa Park Hotel. Notice the fine,
long cycle path which runs from Puerto Pollensa to Alcudia. This particular part
of the island is very popular with cyclists who swarm here in large numbers
during the winter months to make the most of the mild weather and stunning
scenery.
The first section of the resort consists of a stretch of small shops and bars
whilst apartment accommodation tends to be mainly located behind the front line.
For good Mallorcan food and daily fish specials look out for La Goleta and
Simbad which is next door. The lamb fry-up is well worth a try (frito mallorquin)
as is their soup like fish and rice dish called 'arroz brut'. For a special
evening meal try Restaurante Los Zarzales (Carrer de Jafuda Cresques) which also
specialises in Mallorcan dishes. Alternatively, how about a chicken madras at
the Kashir Indian restaurant in the church square.
Once you arrive at the port at the centre of the resort the frontline becomes
pedestrianised with no traffic in sight. A good selection of nice cafés and
restaurants lie on this stretch including El Casinet which is excellent for
fresh pasta and pizzas as well as for grilled meats. The Puerto Pollensa tourist
information office stands here in front of the port entrance.
Heading to the most northerly section of the resort there's a lovely walk along
the Voramar promenade past some delightful old residential homes until you
arrive at the highly recommended
Hotel Illa d'Or where you can stop for lunch
overlooking the whole bay.
For a little more exertion take the 3km walk through the Boquer Valley hills
to Cala Boquer. This is a popular route with birdwatchers and leads to a nice
little beach where you can go for a swim.
Pollensa Town
The town of Pollensa is well worth a visit. It lies 6km inland from the
resort area and is a fully functioning Mallorcan town. Be sure to remember where
you parked the car as all the small streets with identical looking town houses
soon start to look the same!
The main church square has a few terrace cafés where you can get a coffee or
light lunch. Alternatively head for one of the traditional Mallorcan restaurants
nearby which serve superb lamb dishes as well as other local meat options
including goat, suckling pig and rabbit.
The Calvari Square is another option where you'll find a couple of bars and a
pizzeria at the very bottom of the 365 steps which lead up to the small church
at the top. There's also a small Roman bridge on the outskirts of town.
There's a Sunday market where the locals get together to trade their produce.
Excursions From Puerto Pollensa
Other excursions you should certainly do from Puerto Pollensa are to Cap de
Formentor which is one of the most beautiful drives you'll ever do and to
Cala
San Vicente which is a group of coves surrounding the clear waters beneath the
imposing Cavall Bernat.
Things to Do in Pollensa
Many people visit Pollensa as part of an activity holiday. The mountains
above Pollensa which become the Serra de Tramuntana as they stretch down the
north west coast of the island provide fabulous opportunities for walkers and
birdwatchers. Golfers head for the beautiful Alcanada club just west of Alcudia
whilst cyclist swarm here in their thousands during the winter months to tour
this area of great beauty on the many bicycle friendly routes.
