Deia Information
Deia lies between
Soller
and Valldemossa
on the rugged north west coast of Mallorca. It has a well established reputation
as being a magnet for artists, poets and other creative types. Its most famous
resident was the English writer Robert Graves, author of 'I, Claudius' amongst
others. After his death here in 1985 he was buried in the small cemetery behind
the village church.
On arrival by car, park in one of the pay and display car parks and head up to
the village Church of Sant Joan Baptista via the town hall (Ajuntament) building
which has a map and some Deia tourist information available for visitors. Admire
the beautiful mountain views all around including the peak of the Puig de Teix
which climbs from the sea to reach a height of 1064m where it looks down on the
village of Deia and and its quaint shingle beach at Cala de Deia. This can be
reached on foot from the village or by car following the sign on the road
heading out to the north. For budget accommodation in the village take a look at the very pleasant Hostal
Villaverde. In contrast you can stay at one of Mallorca's finest hotels which is
on the main road through Deia. La Residencia has been built within what was
formerly a 16th century manor house. Some of its private suites have their own
swimming pool. Another of the island's most prestigious properties is the nearby
4*
Es Moli Hotel.
The main road through the village is lined with restaurants. Sa Vinya is set
back from the main road and has a nice terrace looking over the buildings.
Restaurante Jaime on the opposite side of the road serves fine Mallorcan dishes
on its beautiful terrace with fabulous views of the surrounding mountains.
If you're heading south look out for the blue parking sign about half way to
Valldemossa (5km). The views of this coastline from the Bar/Restaurant Miradors
de Na Foradada are simply stunning. Whilst in Deia you may want to pay a visit to
Ca
n'Alluny the house and gardens of the English poet and writer Robert
Graves.
