Cala Millor Tourist Information
Cala Millor is the largest and most popular resort on the
east coast of Mallorca. It is more high rise than anywhere else nearby but development hasn't
been over the top tending to grow outwards rather than upwards. It is very much
a family resort with a golden sandy beach stretching for about a kilometre in
front of the many hotels, bars and restaurants that line the long promenade.
Most larger hotels lie at the southern end of the beach with smaller
establishments nearer the centre where the biggest selection of nightlife is to
be found.
Whilst there are a few British bars in Cala Millor the vast majority of visitors
are German. Most British and Scandinavian visitors to this area head for the
neighbouring resort of
Cala Bona
which, although more quaint, doesn't have a beach to speak of. Having said that
the walk between the centre of Cala Millor and Cala Bona marina is no more than
10 minutes along the flat promenade that runs the full length of the resort.
When selecting a hotel in Cala Millor it's well worth finding out the main
nationality of its guests as it can be tricky playing bingo in German!
The main promenade is ideal for people who enjoy long, flat strolls along the
waterfront interspersed with the occasional coffee and beer break. The bicycle
rental shops do a roaring trade here and it's a common sight in Cala Millor to
see cyclists of all ages pedalling between the southern end of Cala Millor beach
as far as Cala Bona without ever having to use a road.
Just one road in from the promenade and parallel to it is the long
pedestrianised Avenida Cristobal Colon which offers a pleasant selection of
cafés, ice cream parlours, bars, restaurants and stylish shops.
The Cala Millor tourist information office is a kiosk at the northern end of the resort.
They provide a great selection of useful pamphlets with ideas of things to do
all over the island. Collect your information there then stop at the terrace of
nearby Café Sa Caleta whilst you plan your stay.
Things to Do in Cala Millor
A little further along from the tourist information office is the ticket
booth for glass bottom boat trips from Cala Millor that go south with several
stops at beautiful coves along the way.
Other local activity options include the
Zoo Safari just south of town on the road to Porto Cristo near
Sa Coma and the
go karting track on the main road out of town. For a round of golf there are
three courses very nearby at Son Servera, Canyamel and Pula whilst Vall D'Or is
a little further south near S'Horta (see Mallorca Golf Courses)
Excursions From Cala Millor
Ideally you'll hire a car in Mallorca to give you the flexibility to do your
own short excursions from Cala Millor. Head 4km inland to the beautiful village
of Son Servera where you can try a traditional Mallorcan sandwich (pa amb oli)
from the terrace of S'Oratge Café overlooking Placa San Juan where the the
church stands. Several other smart restaurants are available if you prefer
something more lavish.
Just south of Cala Millor you can turn off the main road to visit the lovely
beaches at Sa Coma and S'Illot. Both of these small resorts are also mainly
frequented by German tourists. Further south you'll come to
Porto Cristo
which is a lovely town in its own right and is home to the Caves of Drach which
are one of the island's most visited attractions. Continue your drive south
stopping at will at any number of beautiful coves.
Cala D'Or is
a popular destination which is the stepping stone to more
stunning coastal scenery including the national park of Mondragó as well as Cala
Figuera and Cala Santanyi which have long been popular with artists from all
over the world. Take a look at our Mallorca
East coast page for more on this.
