Malaga Excursion to Marbella, Puerto Banus and Mijas
To Malaga - Marbella - Puerto Banus - Mijas Village - Malaga.
Marbella is the quality resort of the Costa del Sol. It has the highest per
capita income in Europe and more Rolls Royces than any European city apart from
London.
In recent years Russian and Italian mafia bosses have been buying up property
and using Marbella as a base to control their criminal empires.
We will meet at a prearranged time at your ship then begin the 40 mile drive
to Marbella heading southwest along the A-7.
On arrival you will be dropped off in the old town of Marbella which is
centred on the partially walled Plaza de los Naranjos. Slowly, this original
quarter is being bought up and turned into boutiques and restaurants but you can
still sit in an ordinary bar in a small old square and look up beyond the
whitewashed alleyways to the mountains of Ronda.
Now we meet again and head just 4 miles further along the coast to the marina
and casino complex of Puerto Banús. This is where the truly rich live in
exclusive villas in the surrounding hills or lie around on phenomenally large
and luxurious yachts in the port.
Puerto Banús has plenty seafood restaurants and is a good choice for a lunch
break.
After lunch we head back towards Malaga then rise several hundred feet above sea
level to the quaint Andaluz village of Mijas, which commands spectacular views
right across the bay to Marbella. On a clear day you can see all the way across
the Mediterranean to the north coast of Africa.
In days gone by the donkey taxi was the only means of transport in Mijas. As
we arrive at the central square you can the donkey taxi tour around the town if
you wish. Alternatively, just stroll around the village with its tightly packed
whitewashed houses with colourful geraniums hanging from balconies and take a
look at the Plaza de Toros (Bullfight ring), which was built in 1920 and is one
of the most unusual in Spain due to its rectangular shape.
After a drink in a typical taverna located at Mijas central square we begin
our journey back to Malaga port in plenty time for your ship's departure.
Please Note: There are a few steep steps to be climbed in Marbella old town
and cobbled streets in Mijas.
