Puerto del Carmen Lanzarote

Puerto Del Carmen is in the municipality of Tias and is proud to be the main resort for tourists on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. With hotels and various other types of accommodation to take care of up to 30,000 guests this busy resort has 7 kilometres of bustling tourist attractions, which includes three fabulous beaches.

The resort is located on the east coast of the island and has "old" and "new" town areas. The new part of the town which has sprung up over the last twenty years or so suits young and old alike with its wide variety of both day and night time entertainment activities. When you land in Arrecife International airport you will find it is only a short journey of around 15 kilometres to take you to Puerto Del Carmen.

Where to stay in Puerto Del Carmen

Accommodation within the resort varies from small studio type apartments to luxury pads, with one and two bed-roomed apartments, bungalows and houses coming somewhere in between. There are no high rise buildings and apartment blocks on the island of Lanzarote, even in the built up tourist areas. This is because of a firm control being kept on the development of the island. Consequently nearly all the accommodations have fantastic views of either the sea or the mountains.

What to do whilst holidaying in Puerto Del Carmen

Whatever your age or nationality there is something for everyone in this busy resort. If you are a sun worshipper, then you need look no further than the glorious sands which stretch for six kilometres as far as neighbouring resorts. Of course, as would be expected, there are numerous water sport activities on offer such as water ski-ing, jet ski-ing and for those who love the water but are a little less adventurous, a pedalo ride will be just up your street.

If you prefer to mix your time in the sun with a little sightseeing, there are all manner of excursions for you to go on, some half day and some full day depending on the content of the trip. The theme parks are especially good entertainment and details of these along with a other day trips can be found in our "Excursions Whilst Holidaying in Lanzarote" section.

Whether you are a keen angler or a novice, a trip out on the Ana Segundo fishing boat which leaves daily from the harbour in the old town is sure to provide you with a good day's entertainment. If you are self catering, maybe you could catch something for tea?

Shopping in Puerto Del Carmen

The main street which runs parallel to the beach is Avenida de Las Playas (street of the beaches). This is where you will find the main shopping areas. Consisting of various retail outlets, bazaars, and boutiques selling everything from tobacco and other duty free goods to clothes and items to take home as a souvenir of your holiday in Lanzarote.

Eating Out in Puerto Del Carmen

The places to eat out in this resort are just too many to mention here. However, if tapas (lots of small dishes of local and Spanish specialties) are your thing you will have no problem in finding a tasty selection to choose from. If you prefer not to try new foods, there are many international style cafes and restaurants which offer the very best in cuisine in typically Spanish or contemporary settings. La Ponderosa is a fine example of both Spanish and international gastronomic delights.

Nightlife in Puerto Del Carmen

What you choose to do after sunset is entirely up to you, but you can rest assured that Puerto Del Carmen has something for everyone. If a meal with a few drinks is what you fancy, the more casual day time eateries turn into candlelit restaurants satisfying your every need. However, if you are a bit of a party animal, there are bars and clubs, especially in the Centro Atlantico where you can dance away to your hearts content, into the early hours of the morning.

The "old town" part of the resort enjoys an elevated position overlooking the sands. The top of the hill is where most of the accommodation of the old town in located so this is worth bearing in mind if you are not so good on your feet. It houses a lovely little harbour with a smattering of superb restaurants offering the very best in locally caught fish and seafood dishes. When you have finished your meal, you can take a stroll through the harbour to the newer area of Puerto Del Carmen. Or if you feel the night is still young you can stay in the old town and pay a visit to The Crowded House, a bar which provides live music every evening, featuring many experienced and talented musicians. The bar is open plan and has a laid back atmosphere for you to sip at your drink and enjoy the entertainment provided for you.

With so much to offer, even if Puerto Del Carmen is not your base whilst holidaying in Lanzarote, it is well worth a place on your itinerary of places to visit.
