Did you know that after Switzerland, Spain is Europe’s most mountainous country?  Whilst famous mainly for tourism to the sunny costas, few people are aware of the exciting prospects for skiers in Spain. The best Spanish ski resorts are in the Pyrenees which are comparable with the mid-sized Alpine resorts.  Further south, above Granada in Andalucia is the Sierra Nevada which in spite of its sunny climate has hosted the World Alpine Ski Championships.

You’ll also find some delightful skiing in the mountains to the north of Madrid in La Pinilla, Navacerrada, Valcotos and Valdesquí.  Further north there is skiing in La Rioja at Valdezcaray, at Alto Campoo in Cantabria and at San Isidro in León though none of these lesser known stations are geared up to large scale tourism as in the Pyrenees and to a lesser extent in the Sierra Nevada.

If you’re considering a ski holiday in Spain the two main destinations to consider are as follows:

Ski Pyrenees
The Spanish Pyrenees are split into the Catalan Pyrenees and the Aragonese Pyrenees. Baqueira Beret is the best known resort in Catalonia whilst Formigal in Aragon is Spain’s largest resort.

Ski Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada ski resort lies 32km from the city of Granada in southern Spain. It is Europe’s most southern ski resort from where you can see as far as Morocco from the top of the slopes on a clear day.

Ski Andorra

Andorra La Vella is the capital of Andorra and has long been a firm favourite with foreign skiers thanks to its proximity to a number of fine resorts. Many visitors choose to stay near the capital and travel out daily to the main resorts including Pas de la Casa, Soldeu, La Massana, La Vella and Arinsal. This gives you access to all the attractions of Andorra including its duty free shopping and lively nighlife.
