Spanish Formula One Grand Prix 2005
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen dominated the 2005 Spanish Grand Prix, beating local
hero Fernando Alonso by 27.6 seconds, with Italian Jarno Trulli coming home
third. Having won the previous three Grand Prixs this season Alonso never looked
like catching Raikkonen in what turned out to be a one sided race.
Raikkonen was never challenged as he scored his third career victory, pulling
away comfortably at the start and proceeding to put in a series of blistering
laps that enabled him to comfortably hold on to the lead, even after making his
first pit stop.
In front of a 115,000 crowd, Renault driver Alonso could not quite deliver,
although his second place consolidated his championship lead. Trulli's third
place marked his and Toyota's third podium of the season, the Italian closely
tailed by team-mate Ralf Schumacher.
Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella came home in fifth place, with Williams' Mark
Webber finishing sixth, ahead of McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya and Red Bull's
David Coulthard scoring the final point in eighth place.
World champion Michael Schumacher who had won the previous four Spanish Grand
Prixs had another miserable race, the German qualifying eighth but running as
high as second before two consecutive tyre failures on laps 44 and 45 forced his
retirement.
