In the past football tourism to Madrid was almost exclusively for the purpose of seeing a Real Madrid game but today there are thousands of annual visitors timing their short break to coincide with a match at the 55,000 seater Vicente Calderón Stadium. Atletico have some of Spain’s most fanatical supporters creating possibly the best atmosphere of all Spain’s football stadiums. Atletico Madrid tickets are often difficult to get hold of, especially against the bigger teams so it’s well worthwhile ordering online through a fully bonded Spanish travel agency.

Getting to the Vicente Calderón
Atlético Madrid’s stadium lies less than 3km from Puerta del Sol which is the tourist centre of Madrid. It’s easy and safe enough to walk to from the centre but most people choose to travel by metro on the green line 5 to Pirámides. There are also many city bus routes which pass close to the stadium and taxis are cheap and convenient for getting there.
Atlético are planning to move to a fully refurbished Estadio La Peineta (Estadio Olímpico de Madrid) in 2016 which will have a capacity of over 70,0000 although many fans object to moving away from the club’s traditional inner city heartland.

Atletico de Madrid Kick-Off Times: Most Atletico games in La Liga take place either on a Saturday night or a Sunday evening so be sure to time your visit to cover these two possibilities. However, the Spanish Football Association do not announce the day and time of kick-offs until a little over a week before the game. Once confirmed the match details will also be published on the Atletico Madrid website. There are also a few Monday fixtures during the season though they are unlikely to affect Atlético. Scheduled midweek fixtures are on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Champions League games are of course scheduled well in advance for Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8.45pm local time. You can discuss any issues relating to matchdays and kick-off times when booking with our English speaking sales staff. Weekend visitors rarely have any problems with match schedules.
