Cycling Holidays in Spain
As Europe's second most mountainous country
Spain is a Mecca for the serious cyclist. For those not so
keen to take on the highest peaks the country is big enough to
accommodate all levels of cycling ability so you should have no problem
finding the correct terrain for your cycling holiday. As more and
more visitors to Spain seek something other than the traditional beach
holiday we are finding we are seeing a growing number of visitors coming to Spain
to enjoy cycling holidays and experience what the guide books refer
to as "discovering the real Spain".As Western Europe's second
largest country with a varied landscape ranging from the wet, green
regions of Cantabria and Galicia along the Atlantic north coast to
the desert landscape of Almeria in the east there are endless
possibilities for the cycling enthusiast. In planning your
trip do bear in mind that given the physical size of Spain it is important
to research the expected climate before embarking on a cycling
holiday. The north tends to be very wet with fairly constant
temperature all year round. The main tourist destinations in the
south of the country and on the Balearic and Canary islands experience
hot summers and mild winters which make them attractive locations for
winter breaks but are not recommended in the peak of summer due to the
soaring temperatures. For spectators the annual Vuelta de España takes
place in September when some of the world's top professional cyclists
compete in what is one of Europe's top three professional cycle races
along with the Tour de France and Giro de Italia.
