Nevada and playing golf on nearby courses.
Aqua Tropic Water Park
During the summer months this saltwater waterpark at the end of Playa de
Velilla is a popular venue for locals and visitors alike. You can check the
latest prices and opening hours on their website at

Parque Majuelo
The Majuelo Park is a must visit located just off the Avenida de Europa in
the shadow of the Castillo de San Miguel. It is an outdoor Botanical Gardens
with an impressive range of tropical and subtropical flora. The highlight of the
park is the well preserved remains of the Phoenician fish salting factory dating
back to the 4th century BC. You'll also find artisan workshops and a nice little
bar in the shade. There's an annual Jazz Festival held here for a week in
mid-July every year. Check dates at
Jazz en
la Costa. The park is free and open most of the time. The annual Gastronomic
Fair is also held here over a weekend in mid-June which is well worth looking
out for.
Almunecar Tourist Office
Beyond Parque Majuelo at the end of Avenida de Europa is the beautiful
tourist office of Almunecar which is housed in the Moorish Palacete de La
Najarra. They provide maps and local information and the shaded gardens are a

Almunecar Aquarium
The Almunecar aquarium is in Plaza Kuwait just next to the covered food
market in the town centre. It is the largest aquarium in Andalucia with around
3000 fish of more than 200 species on display most of which can be found in the
Mediterranean. The highlight for most visitors is the 17 metre shark tunnel.
This is another highlight for children on holiday which is open from 10.30am
until 10pm during the summer months. Unfortunately the Almunecar Aquarium
website is only in Spanish at the time of writing
El Peñon del Santo
Overlooking the town centre beaches is El Peñon del Santo which is worth
walking upto to see the great views along the coast. Take a look at the writing
at the bottom of the statue of Abd-ar-Rahman I who landed in Almunecar in 755.
The translation of the text reads "Oh palm tree, you are like me, a stranger in
the western world, away from your homeland".
Castillo de San Miguel
Almunecar's castle is right in the town centre overlooking the main beaches.
Its origins date back to the 1st century BC under Roman rule but it was under
the Moors that it was heavily fortified and was used as a short break
destination by the rulers of Granada's Nasrid dynasty. Under Christian rule the
castle took the name of Almunecar's patron saint and served as a major defence
over the coming centuries against threats to the town from pirates. British
naval attacks against Napoleon's forces during the
Peninsular
War created major damage to the castle after which it fell into disrepair.
It then served as the town's cemetery until major restoration work began in the
1980s. Today you can vist the castle and get a feel for its fascinating history
as you stroll around it.
Opening Times: 10.30-13.30 and 17.30-20.00
(Tuesday to Saturday) 10.30-14.00 (Sundays and Holidays) Closed Mondays
Roman Aqueducts
Fresh running water was crucial for the operation of the fish salting and
curing under Roman rule so the Romans developed an extensive network of
aqueducts which date back to the first century AD. These aqueducts remain in
good shape in various places as they run for 6km up the Rio Seco valley. They
were further developed under Moorish rule for agricultural purposes and it's
incredible to see that four of the five original Roman structures are still
being used to irrigate the small fruit plantations along the valley. La Carrera
Aqueduct is the nearest aqueduct to town behind the Carbonell DIY shop. More
impressive is the Torrecuevas Aqueduct which is about 3km from Almunecar along
the road along the valley towards Jete and Otivar. The Rio Seco Aqueducts are
the most impressive though not the most accessible. You can walk along the river
bed for about 750m from town to see them or take the Jete/Otivar road out of
town turning sharp left after the school from where you can see them at the end
of that street.
Friday Market
Every Friday there's an open air market in the car park next to the main N340
road through Almmunecar just opposite the Lidl supermarket. It's a typical
market attracting locals and tourists alike. There are plenty clothes and bag
stalls as well as ceramics, Spanish kitchen equipment, music CDs and football
shirts. The place gets packed every Friday morning so parking in town becomes
nearly impossible. If you're planning a food shop on a Friday at the Mercadona
or Lidl supermarket then leave it until the afternoon when the market has moved
out. There's also a car boot type market in the same place on the first Saturday
of every month.
Flamenco in Almunecar
The best known place around Almunecar to see flamenco dancing is at Venta
Luciano which is about 3km out of town along the Jete/Otivar road. They have a
charming venue overlooking the valley where they have been hosting all inclusive
flamenco evenings including drinks and barbecue for the past 30 years. It's a
good idea to arrange a return taxi trip there so that you can enjoy a few
sangrias with the show. More information at the
Venta Luciano
website.
Museo del Bonsai
If you want to escape to a place of serenity for a little while pop into the
Bonsai museum in Plaza Marruecos at the top of Avenida de Andalucia. This
tranquil spot promotes the understanding of the Japanese art of Bonsai and has
over 130 of these tiny trees on display.
