Albufeira Algarve
Albufeira is known for its many beaches, rocks and cliffs and is the Algarve's
premier resort. With sunbathing during the day and an exciting nightlife at the
clubs, bars and restaurants at night, the atmosphere proves to be enjoyable and
relaxing.
The green countryside around Albufeira is spotted with almond, fig, orange and
pine trees in which the colourfully decorated chimneys peek through from their
yellow roof tops. A visit to one of the many beaches that are all surrounded by
rocks and cliffs to protect sunbathers from hot winds will delight visitors. All
are edged with turquoise blue ocean, covered in fine sand, and each beach has
its own unique features that are simply enchanting. The Falesia beach is endless
miles of soft white sand, rimmed with pine trees and the reddish colour of the
cliffs that surround it. Beauty in its truest form. The São Rafael and Vigia
beaches hold great beauty and are separated by massive rocks. They have
excellent tourist facilities. The nearby Ponte Pequena and Ninho das Andorinhas
are rock formations that are quite fascinating.
There are three golf courses in the area that are most popular with tourists
and locals alike. The Salgado is near the coast and the ocean breezes that come
across the course are more than welcome to players. Pine Cliffs is a smaller
course, but equally beautiful with lots of breathtaking scenery and ocean views.
Finally, Balaia Golf Village is for the die-hard golfer where fine accommodation
is available. Although the Balaia is mainly for beginners it also attracts more
advanced players who use the facilities to improve their distance control.
Within the town of Albufeira itself, there are other extraordinary sites to
visit. The Bell and Clock Towers are two of the most beautiful towers in
southern Portugal. Both built in the 19th century and are full of historical
information. The Parish Church and the Misericórdia Chapel are also breath
taking churches that are located in this fair city. If you are looking to go
hiking, a trip to the Xorino Cave should be on your itinerary. This cave was
used to house Moorish fugitives during the Christian Reconquest of Albufeira.
Arquivo Histórico e Biblioteca Municipal is a home for examples of manuscripts
of the historical events of this region. A trip to the Municipal Archaeological
Museum is sure to tempt you to discover more of this region's history and
culture.
During the peak holiday season in August there are three main festivals to
look out for: the Feira de Na. Sra. da Orada, the Feira de Frango (Chicken
Festival) and the Feira de Nossa Senhora da Guia. If you are planning on
travelling at the beginning of February you can catch the Feira do Pau Roxo.
